Seibersdorf Castle

Seibersdorf Castle, initially built with a moat in the second half of the 16th century, consists of a noble three-storey central palace, four enclosing corner bastions and a spectacular park with lake.

Originally constructed as a military complex and part of the Austrian defence line along the Leitha River, its present baroque appearance reflects numerous alterations executed in the early 18th century. These include the creation of the grand hall in the main building, a generous reorganization of the main stairwell and accentuation of the main entrance by addition of a central tower with a baroque rooftop and a new chapel. The exterior facades were redesigned and executed along the prevailing architectural

style of their time. Furthermore the corner bastions at the former moat received a baroque treatment and two ancillary buildings facing the park were transformed into garden pavilions. Access to the castle was reorganized and directed across bridges ornamented with stone sculptures. The courtyard has since been rearranged and landscaped.

The castle and its adjoining buildings have been extensively renovated and refurbished in recent years. On these occasions contemporary amenities and utilities (heating, gas, water, electrical supply) were installed. Frescoes in the grand hall, which for many years had remained undiscovered below layers of paint, could be carefully restored to their baroque splendour. Today they create a dignified atmosphere for the annual Seibersdorf Music Festival with performances of classical music. Seibersdorf is located approximately 25 kilometres south of Vienna and the international airport, which can be reached within 30 minutes.
